International Conference on

Grammaticalization and (Inter)Subjectification

November 11-13, 2010, Brussels (Belgium)

This conference emerges from an interuniversity research project (2007-2011) on ‘Grammaticalization and (Inter)Subjectification’, funded by the Belgian Federal Government (IAP VI/44), and involving the Universities of Antwerp, Ghent, Hanover, Leuven, and Louvain-la-Neuve, and the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren (see http://webh01.ua.ac.be/gramis/index.html).

The aim of the conference is to allow an exchange of thoughts and views on the subject matter between members of the project and the international scientific community.

We invite papers (20 minute presentations) dealing with any aspect of the processes of grammaticalization and (inter)subjectification, both empirical and conceptual, from any theoretical angle, but we are especially interested in papers dealing with

  • the interaction between the processes of grammaticalization and
    (inter)subjectification;
  • the relation of grammaticalization and (inter)subjectification to other mechanisms of language change, including, most notably, analogy; and
  • processes of degrammaticalization and de-(inter)subjectification: how
    (in)frequent are they, what kinds of factors trigger them, and what mechanisms are at work in them?
