GRAMIS research: Johan van der Auwera works on the grammaticalization of modality and mood (especially the prohibitive) and the relation between grammaticalization and analogy. The approach is predominantly typological and when it is language specific, the focus is on Germanic and especially on English.

Position: Professor of General and Dutch Linguistics
Research unit: Center for Grammar, Cognition & Typology
GRAMIS research: Jan Nuyts works on grammaticali-zation and (especially) (inter)subjectification in
modal expressions (not only grammatical/auxiliary forms, but also
adverbial/adjectival forms and full verbs), predominantly in Dutch and
other Germanic languages, both in a synchronic and a diachronic
perspective. And is concerned with the theoretical implications of
grammaticalization and (inter)subjecti-fication for cognitive and
functionalist models of the linguistic system and language processing.
