Peace in Flanders

Attitudes and commitments of Flemish people regarding peace and violence

The project ‘Peace in Flanders' is based on a sociological research that has been carried out in cooperation with the M²P research group (Antwerp University). The research team interviewed more than thousand Flemings with regard to their perceptions, attitudes and commitments towards peace and violence. The research focuses on the following questions: How do Flemings perceive peace? What attitudes do Flemings have towards violence? What is the peace activism of Flemings and what is their potential peace activism? It is the first time that such a large-scale survey on peace and violence has been performed in Flanders. The results will be used as the basis of the information and advisory tasks of the Peace Institute, but the report also offers a broader framework to reflect upon peace and violence in society. On October 2th 2007, civil society representatives, policymakers and scholars were invited to a conference to discuss the research results and possible initiatives.
