Electronic News Archive

Research on television news is relatively scarce compared to newspaper research, largely because it has always been held up by practical barriers. Obtaining and storing large amounts of news bulletins proved to be a difficult task and broadcasters weren’t always eager to work along. The Electronic News Archive (ENA) wants to be a solution for these practical problems. ENA is an on-line service for scientists, lecturers and master students providing the main news bulletins in streaming video, both in full version as cut up in news items accessible through a search engine based on a (mainly thematic) encoding of the news content and news sources. The great advantage of the ENA-dataset is that it is not a sample, all broadcasts since 2003 are in the database. The full news broadcasts from the two main Flemish TV-channels VRT (public) and VTM (commercial) are available from October 2001 till present. The news items are available since January 2003. For the eight year period 2003-2010, this database contains 122.726 news items.
