abstract | Today, more and more diverse people take to the streets to protest. In 10 years the average amount of people demonstrating each year increased with nearly 60 percent in Belgium. Despite the individualization of protest due to the introduction of new, social media, a strong civil society remains indespensible to feed and secure a steady flow of protest. This is one of the main conclusions in Jeroen Van Laer’s doctoral thesis who interviewed more than 5,000 protest participants at ten different demonstrations in Belgium. /// Vandaag betogen meer en meer verschillende mensen. In nauwelijks 10 jaar tijd steeg het gemiddeld aantal betogers per jaar in België met zo’n 60 procent. Ondanks de individualisering van protest door de opkomst van nieuwe, sociale media, blijft een sterk middenveld noodzakelijk om protest te voeden en in stand te houden. Dat blijkt uit een doctoraatsonderzoek van Jeroen Van Laer (Universiteit Antwerpen) dat meer dan 5.000 demonstranten bevroeg op tien verschillende betogingen in België.
