Johan van der Auwera is professor of General and English Linguistics. He holds undergraduate degrees in Germanic Philology and in Philosophy (1975). His PhD was on the philosophy of language (1980) and his ‘habilitation' on the structure of the noun phrase (1990). His student and postdoc days were spent in Antwerp, Berkeley, Stockholm, Hannover and Nijmegen and visiting appointments took him to Paris, Princeton, Gothenburg, Hong Kong, Kyoto and Bangkok. Current research, within Antwerp’s Center for Grammar, Cognition, and Typology, and teaching, within Antwerp's Faculty of Letters, focuses on grammatical semantics and typology (including areal typology and dialectology), with special reference to mood, modality, negation, indefinites and impersonals. He is the editor in chief of Linguistics.
