A
common species throughout Belgium, sometimes in great numbers.
The
larva feeds between loosely spun leaves of Elodea, Potamogeton,
Chara or other water-plants, at depths
up to 5 cm. It hibernates. Pupation takes place in a cocoon attached to
a water-plant below the surface of the water.
The
adults, who live only two days, fly from the end of May till mid
September. Most abundant in the second half of August. They rest at the
base of water-plants or on floating material during the day. Males and
winged females come to light. Wingless females stay below the surface
of the water.
