Catalogue
of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Leucinodes orbonalis (Guenée, 1854)

Only one specimen, caught in a light trap at Brussels on 05 August 2004. This tropical species is a pest on eggplant in Asia and Africa, but since 2004 more than 120 interceptions of infested fruit have been noted.  The Belgian record represents one of the earliest adventive specimens in Europe.

The larva lives on Solanum melongena and it is often imported with that food plant. It  hibernates in the larval stage in a dirty coloured cocoon attached on the host plant.

Hitherto, the only specimen was seen during August.
