of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Heringocrania unimaculella (Zetterstedt, 1839)

A common species in Belgium, but overlooked

The monophagous larva feeds on Betula. The mine is a large, full depth blotch along the edge of the leaf. Frass in long threads. Pupates in a tough silken cocoon in the earth or debris.

The adults fly during March and April. They can be observed resting on the trees or flying around the trees in sunshine. Later they occasionally come to light.
