Catalogue
of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Phyllonorycter messaniella (Zeller, 1846)

A rather rare species in Belgium, but probably overlooked.

The larva makes small mines with one strong central crease on the underside of Carpinus, Castanea, Fagus, Quercus, Tilia and rarely on Prunus. Pupates in a dark brown pupa in a very flimsy cocoon.

The adults fly in two generations a year; May and  August. As in Britain, there is recently a third larva generation found on evergreen Oak during the period December - March.
