of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Hepialus humuli (Linnaeus, 1758)

A rather common species throughout Belgium.

The larva lives on the roots of grasses and small herbaceous plants like Rumex and Humulus lupulus. Eggs are simply dropped over suitable habitat, while the female is in flight. Hibernates as larva once or twice and pupates in a cocoon in the ground.

The adults fly in one generation a year; from late May till the end of July. They come to light.
