of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Stigmella floslactella (Haworth, 1828)

A not so common species in Belgium.

The larva makes a leafmine on Corylus avellana and rarely also on Carpinus betulus. The course of the mine is sinuous and rarely following a vein.

The adults fly in two generations a year: in late April-May and July-August.

ID mine: starts as a narrow gallery almost or completely filled with frass, when its getting broader, the frass is placed in irregular arcs, leaving narrow clear margins, abouth 1/3 of width of gallery. Width at end of the gallery is greater than that of the larva. The mines of Stigmella microtheriella are sometimes very similar, but in this species the frass in the early mine is narrow linear leaving clear margins. In S. floslactella the frass is broad and fills almost or completely the whole width of the gallery.
