of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Stigmella malella (Stainton, 1854)

A not so common species in Belgium. Sometimes becoming a pest in orchards.

The yellowish larva makes a variable leafmine on Malus sylvestris and rarely on Prunus. Egg is laid on the underside of the leaf, close to a vein. The mine starts as a narrow winding gallery which sometimes widens conspicuously towards a secondary blotch. Pupation in a yellowish brown cocoon among leaf litter.

The adults fly in two generations a year; in May and August.
