Catalogue
of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Nymphalidae

The taxonomic status of certain subfamilies in the Nymphalidae is questionable. The family is represented in all geographical regions with about 6000 species. The Satyrinae, with about 1500 species, are polyphyletic and also the Nymphalidae, with around 3000 species, are probably not monophyletic. The Danainae include about 150 species of mainly tropical distribution (Scoble 1992: 311).
Identification: Bink 1992, Ebert & Rennwald 1991, Emmet & Heath 1989, Forster & Wohlfahrt 1955, Hesselbarth, van Oorschot & Wagener 1995, Higgins & Hargreaves 1983, Higgins & Riley 1970 (+ later editions, reprints and traductions in several languages), Howarth 1973, Krzywicki 1966, Niculescu 1965, Seitz 1906-1909, Whalley 1981, Wynhoff, Made & Swaay 1990.
