Catalogue
of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Gymnancyla canella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

A very local and rare species in Belgium.

The larva feeds on Salsola kali and very rarely on Atriplex. At first, it burrows into the stems, usually the side-shoots and later it feeds externally under a silken web on the unripe seeds. Hibernates as a pupa in a subterranean cocoon of silk mixed with sand, it may lie over two years.

The adults fly in July and August in one generation a year. They are active at dusk and later come to light.
