Catalogue
of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Hyles gallii (Rottemburg, 1775)

A very rare and local species throughout Belgium. Numbers can fluctuate considerably from year to year.

Declinig in many places.

The larva lives mainly on Chamerion  angustifolium and also on Galium. Hibernates as pupa underground, it suffers from the wet winters when many die.

The adults fly in two generations a year; from end April till September. Most adults have mainly been observed from July till August. They are active from dusk onwards, visiting flowers and later come to light.
