of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Proserpinus proserpina (Pallas, 1772)

A rare migrant which has established itself in some regions in Belgium. The species is recorded from all provincies.

The larva lives mainly on Oenothera biennis, but can also been found on different species of Epilobium. The caterpillar occurs in two colour forms: a normal creamy-white one and a brownish one (see more pictures). Hibernates as a pupa among plant debris.

The adults fly from early May till the end of June. They come to light.
