A
rarely observed species in Belgium, mainly recorded from the coastal
region and from the Kempen. Recently (2011) first observation in the southern part of the country.
The
larva lives in decayed wood, under dead bark and in rotten plant
material from conifers and deciduous trees such as Abies alba,
Robinia, Alnus, Betula,
Quercus, Fagus sylvatiaca,
Populus and Fraxinus.
The
adults have been observed from June till late September, occasionally
till late October. They fly
during the night and at dawn. They come to light and occasionally to sugar.
During 2011 an individual was trapped on 28 March, the earliest record
so far. Likely the pupa was lying in a warm sunny place and with the
good spring weather it emerges a lot earlier than usual.
